Sterling Silver Jewelry: What Do White Gold, Yellow Gold, and Rose Gold Mean?

Sterling Silver Jewelry: What Do White Gold, Yellow Gold, and Rose Gold Mean?

When choosing a meaningful piece of jewelry, the metal and color are often just as important as the design.

At Love Catcher, you may notice that after selecting Sterling Silver as your material, you can choose from three colors: White Gold, Yellow Gold, and Rose Gold.

But what do these options actually mean? Is White Gold the same as solid white gold? Does choosing Yellow Gold mean your jewelry is made entirely of gold?

The answer is simpler than you might think.

When you choose Sterling Silver, your jewelry is made with a 925 sterling silver base, regardless of which color you select. The color option determines the outer plated finish.

Let's explore the differences so you can choose with confidence.

Understanding Material vs. Color

When customizing your Love Catcher jewelry, you'll typically see two separate options:

Material determines the metal used to make the jewelry.

Color determines its final appearance through the surface finish.

For example, choosing:

  • Material: Sterling Silver

  • Color: Yellow Gold

means your jewelry is made from 925 sterling silver with a yellow gold-plated finish.

It does not mean the jewelry is made of solid yellow gold.

This distinction also applies to White Gold and Rose Gold.

What Are the Three Sterling Silver Color Options?

White Gold: A Classic Silvery-White Finish

If you love the bright, timeless appearance of white gold, this option offers a similar look with a sterling silver base.

Your jewelry is crafted from 925 sterling silver with a white precious-metal-plated finish, creating a clean, luminous appearance.

Although the color option is called White Gold, selecting it under Sterling Silver does not mean the jewelry is made of solid white gold.

This finish is ideal for those who prefer a classic, understated style.

Yellow Gold: A Warm, Timeless Look

Yellow Gold offers the traditional golden appearance many people love.

When you select Sterling Silver with Yellow Gold as the color, your jewelry has a 925 sterling silver base with a layer of yellow gold plating.

At Love Catcher, our yellow gold-plated sterling silver jewelry features approximately 3 microns of gold plating, providing a substantial plated finish.

This option is ideal if you love the warmth of gold while looking for a more accessible alternative to solid gold.

Rose Gold: A Soft, Romantic Finish

Rose Gold has a delicate pink-gold tone that feels warm, elegant, and romantic.

When selected with Sterling Silver, the jewelry is made from 925 sterling silver with a rose gold-plated finish.

Love Catcher's rose gold-plated sterling silver jewelry also features approximately 3 microns of plating.

Rose Gold is a beautiful option for anyone who prefers a softer alternative to traditional yellow or white tones.

What Does 3-Micron Gold Plating Mean?

Not all gold-plated jewelry has the same plating thickness.

Gold-plating thickness is measured in microns, represented by the symbol μm.

1 micron = 0.001 millimeters

That means:

3 microns = 0.003 millimeters

While this may sound extremely thin, 3 microns is a relatively substantial thickness for gold-plated jewelry.

Some decorative gold plating is less than one micron thick. A thicker layer provides more gold coverage than very thin plating.

At Love Catcher, we use approximately 3-micron gold plating for our yellow gold and rose gold sterling silver finishes.

However, it's important to understand that thicker plating does not make jewelry identical to solid gold.

All plated finishes can gradually wear over time, even when the plating is relatively thick.

Our White Gold option uses a different white-metal plating process, so the 3-micron gold-plating specification should not automatically be applied to that finish.

Is Gold-Plated Sterling Silver the Same as Solid Gold?

No. Although the two may look similar, their construction is different.

Gold-Plated Sterling Silver

The jewelry has a 925 sterling silver base with a gold-colored plated surface.

Solid Gold

The jewelry itself is made from a gold alloy, such as 10K, 14K, or 18K gold, depending on the selected material.

Gold-plated sterling silver can offer a beautiful golden appearance at a more accessible price.

Solid gold does not have a gold-plated sterling silver surface that can gradually wear away.

If you plan to wear your jewelry very frequently and prefer to avoid the issue of gold plating wearing through, solid gold may be a better long-term choice.

Will Gold-Plated Sterling Silver Fade or Tarnish?

Over time, any plated finish may gradually wear due to friction, moisture, daily activities, and exposure to certain chemicals.

How quickly this happens varies from person to person.

Rings, for example, often experience more friction than necklaces because our hands regularly come into contact with other surfaces.

As the plating wears, the sterling silver underneath may eventually become visible. Exposed sterling silver can also naturally tarnish over time.

This is why even a substantial 3-micron plated finish should not be considered permanent.

The best way to help preserve your jewelry is through thoughtful everyday care.

How to Care for Gold-Plated Sterling Silver Jewelry

A few simple habits can help reduce unnecessary wear and protect your jewelry's finish.

  • Remove jewelry before showering or swimming. Avoid prolonged exposure to water and pool chemicals.

  • Take jewelry off during exercise or housework. This helps reduce friction and exposure to sweat or cleaning products.

  • Avoid direct contact with perfume, lotion, and skincare products. Apply these products before putting on your jewelry.

  • Clean gently. Use a soft, non-abrasive cloth and avoid harsh polishing products.

  • Store separately. Keep your jewelry in a dry, soft pouch or jewelry box to help prevent scratching.

Proper care can help extend the appearance of your plated finish, although no plating can be guaranteed to remain unchanged forever.

Which Sterling Silver Color Should You Choose?

The best choice depends on your personal style.

Choose White Gold if you love a bright, classic silvery-white appearance.

Choose Yellow Gold if you prefer a traditional, warm golden finish.

Choose Rose Gold if you love a softer, romantic pink-gold tone.

All three options offer different appearances while sharing the same 925 sterling silver base.

If you would rather have jewelry made from solid gold, choose a Solid Gold material option instead of selecting a gold color under Sterling Silver.

A Meaningful Keepsake, in the Color You Love

At Love Catcher, we believe that the meaning behind your jewelry matters more than the metal you choose.

Whether your keepsake preserves breastmilk, ashes, hair, or another treasured memory, the right finish should reflect your personal style and how you plan to wear your piece.

Our Sterling Silver options allow you to enjoy three beautiful finishes — White Gold, Yellow Gold, and Rose Gold — while keeping the same 925 sterling silver foundation.

Understanding the difference between the base metal and its plated finish helps you choose a keepsake that fits your preferences, budget, and expectations.

The memory is yours. The color is your choice.
