What Is a Double Coating?

What Is a Double Coating?

A double coating is a preservation technique where a second layer of epoxy resin is applied over your custom keepsake’s resin stone. For pieces featuring a breastmilk gemstone, as well as others, this second layer acts as a reinforced shield against natural wear, strengthening the stone's structural integrity and locking in its natural beauty.

How does a double coating enhance durability?

The primary benefit of a double coating is the significant boost in durability it provides. Resin and organic materials can be sensitive to environmental factors. By adding a secondary seal of resin, we create a barrier that helps prevent the stone from scratching, chipping, or cracking during everyday wear.

Can it prevent the gemstone from yellowing?

Yes. Over time, exposure to UV rays and natural elements can cause untreated resin to develop a yellowish tint. The second coating of epoxy resing can help filter out harmful light, dramatically reducing the risk of discoloration and preserving the original appearance of your gemstone.

Does a double coating protect against water damage?

While no keepsake jewelry should be fully submerged in water, a double coating provides superior moisture resistance. It seals microscopic pores in the resin, preventing accidental exposure to water, sweat, or humidity from seeping into the stone and compromising its quality. We still recommend taking off your keepsake jewelry before showing and swimming, however.

Will a double coating alter the look of my jewelry?

Not at all. The second layer is just clear epoxy resin and applied with precision, ensuring it remains completely transparent and glossy. It enhances the depth and shine of the gemstone without altering its unique color, texture, or the delicate details of your personalized piece.

Is a double coating necessary for all keepsakes?

While optional, we highly recommend it for jewelry intended for frequent or daily wear, such as rings and bracelets. It offers peace of mind, knowing your sentimental piece has the highest level of defense against the wear and tear of daily life.
